No Shop time today, but a pretty good day anyway...

Apparently, Eli has been contemplating what he wants for his 1st birthday in a few months:

I'm still amazed at how much he is riveted to the laptop or desktop by Boowa and Kwala. Too bad the people that run the site have no idea how to merchandise- but its probably for the best for our finances.

We played trucks today, and hung out, until it was time to get ready for daddy to go see Marcus Luttrell speak. The Des Moines Entrepreneurs Organization had him over at the ValAir Ballroom.

As I people watched the crowd (I was about 30 minutes early,) I am pretty sure that only the vets there had much of a clue what he was talking about. It was kind of odd to see a bunch of "suits" who had paid $100 a head to go see this man, and yet be confused why he had a dog with him for his book signing. One genius behind me even asked a buddy "He's not blind, is he?"
Jeebus. Thick.

At least I got to see him speak. My pics all came out for crap, but its all good. I know I was there, and I had a chance to give him one of these: (Decal is NOT my idea, but I executed it a bit differently. Its about 14 inches wide, and 2.5 tall.)

Saturday will breing more work, and more driving. I hope the weather holds.

Snow Day...

...it sucks. Glad to be home, but I know someone likely made it in today; I just seem to have an issue with the 2 feet of snow keeping my truck in position on the street out front. Couldn't even make it up the driveway last night, and was even stuck in the lot at work for about 30 minutes last night trying to leave before the storm really kicked in. SO, since I have time online...

Pictures of the Boy...

...some of you have been asking about the boy- the Mrs. has some more recent pics up at her blog- we both take plenty, it's just getting around to uploading them that is the trick...

The Question of Pirate or Ninja...

...has been solved in our household.

Kiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii-YAH!

S-Mart NO MORE! Serenity NOW!

(Apologies for gratuitous use of Mal's ship's name.)

Hallelujah! Friday evening (Saturday morning, in S-mart time) I discussed with the mrs., and we decided tat S-Mart had to go. you see, 85 hours a week is too much for this fat old 'smith, and projects were being back-burnered that did not need to be.

I DID have a blast building bikes, but when I kept working myself out of work, I would get assigned to "big Goonie" type stuff- like "move these heavy things here" or "just toss those 6 pallets of pet food there."

The final straw was when I called in Friday, unable to see straight and drive safely, after spending a lovely, albeit long (for me) day with the Mrs. on her birthday. 2 hours or so of sleep (Eli needed playtime!) The call ended something like this:

"...well, just make sure you come in the next 2 nights, we need you in meat."

What I HEARD was:
"Make sure to come in, be unappreciated, hurt your back & freeze your ass of for 5 hours, go home, sleep for 2 hours, drive an hour to the shop, work there for 8-10 hours, drive back an hour, sleep for 2, then come in so you can freeze your ass off for another 5 hours (all while lifting 40 lb boxes of frozen dead things over your head) so that you can then go home, sleep for 2 hours, shower, drive 40 minutes to church and sit on a plastic chair for 2 hours. You will then have permission to spend the afternoon with your family, for family day."

So, Friday night/Saturday morning went like this:
11 PM- shower & change
11:20 Got to Wal-, er, I meant- S-Mart, park, and smoke a cigar
11:45, go in & harrass the awesome woodworker buddy of mine, Todd, who works there and
11:59 go turn in my ID & discount card, with my box cutter, and tell them all how much fun it was.

I did a quick drive-by and said some goodbyes to some of the hardworkers that are there, solely because of being economically screwed (one fella has 7 kids and lost a business that was pulling in $400k a year!)

Ain't gonna miss it at all. After 3 night of solid rest now, and lots of play-time with the boy, I know it was the right thing. We don't need the discounts that badly, and I don't need any more of their stock right now. 1/2 the fun was seeing what ammo came in, and being able to tell customers to come get it before it hit the shelves (but to not bogart it.)

Sadly, my one Hmong friend there (or was he Karen, I don't know) I did not get to see- but he probably won't notice I'm gone anyway. All us white folks look alike to him, I'm sure.

So, Frak it. I quit. No notice. The 3 of us went fishing, and the new guy had a GREAT time.

Besides, It's almost time to fire up the new vinyl cutter...

Keeping the Original Finish on a Gun

(note: Sean is out for a short while taking care of some new responsibilities, so I will be guest blogging for a couple of posts, at most, while he is busy. -Eli)

So, you got a new gun 6 months ago, rarelyget it out to the range, and although it is a REAL beaut...you still feel possessed to do something MORE with it.

Sean might kick my butt for saying this, but perhaps you SHOULDN"T spend beacoup (pronounced BU-KU for those of you in Rio Linda) bucks on making your black pistol green, or your blue rifle ACU. Maybe you should REALLY be buying ammo and PRACTICING. I've got an adopted uncle (although he is as of yet unaware that he is adopted by me) that likes to say that "Ammo turns money into skill."

This couldn't be truer in 2009, when 95% of gun owners seem to 1) bitch about ammo availability and 2) be waiting for the Nintendo Wii version of the AppleSeed to learn how to hit.

FU FU FU FU FU FU FFU FU FUDGE! I just spit up a bit. Sorry.

Anyhow, back to my original point. Why take a nice Colt or Smith and have it sandblasted into oblivion, parkerized (you'd never buy a parked Smith, anyway, would you?) and then have that sucker polymer coated to match an out fit that you (likely) only wear twice a year, or at best, every other weekend for paintball? I mean, come on- it's cool to see pics of your gun online, but NOT on "Ugly Gun Sunday!"

Now granted, DuraCoat Refinishing and Camo is Sean's bread and butter, and a well done camo job (even some like on Xaviers' blog) is kinda badass, but only for someone that has ALREADY covered the basics and their bases. Before polymer coatings, there were those gawdawful "Franklin Mint" style blinged-out guns- who the hell ever wanted a $3000 Gold-plated, deep blued Tommy Gun, or an Elvis Tribute .45? AND THEY STILL EXIST. Have you SEEN the Gold Chuck Norris Revolver? AAACK! By a company called America Remembers-Remembers WHAT, exactly? That Americans apparently have too much disposable income, or that they have too many credit cards?)

If the damn thing is worn out, or likely to be an all-weather WORKING man's gun, or to be strapped to your ATV for most of its like, then cool. Some sort of polymer coating is definitely the way to go.

If it is just a "Cool thing" to bring a new shooter into the fold, then SWEET. VERY SWEET. (The anti-painted gun crowd can STFU now.)

But if you have only put one box of shells through it, can't hit squat, and know (if you REALLY in your heart suspect) that in 6-18 months you will be selling this gun at a loss to get something else new, then WTF, over?

Leave it factory, go practice with it, keep it clean, recycle your brass. Rinse & repeat.

If you can't do that, trade the damn thing for an XBOX.

Bring your piece to us when you have worn the finish off, or after pin-punch accidents where it is scratched up, or when you want the parts on you new build to all match in color. Bring us your pawn-shop salvage projects. Send us you crazy-color gift-firearms, Chick guns that get new shooters interested, etc.

Hell, even bring us the pieces you intend to go into museums (one such requested concept picture below.)

But PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE- do not ask us to wipe the cosmoline & packing material off of NIB 1950's era 1911a1's and "do something cool" with them. Otherwise, I'll shrink wrap them, keep them in MY safe, and you'll never get them back.

Like my Dad (Sean) sez, sometimes the original finish is the best one-of-a-kind feature you can get. He won't even allow me to get any tattoos untill I have enough callouses from hard work- he doesn't want me to be some-tribal-tat covered sissy boy with "unearned decoration." So, the same goes for guns.

I might have upset some of you with this post, and if so, too bad. I won't guest-post much, and you can man-up and deal. Either that, or kiss my butt. Here, I'll hold it up for ya...

Elijah Michael Leonard "Galt"
aka "Eli"
DOB 6-5-2009

Talk to ya later...me & Dad are gonna go watch the latest GunTech DVD, then maybe he'll read me a couple of chapters from "the Gunslinger," or my new Jackalope book.

Later!

-Eli

Busy Busy Busy!

Holy crap, is there a LOT going on. Almost no time to post here these days.
I have about a dozen weapons I'm working on, including 2 I need to get done for myself or relatives, and a ton of photos that need shot.

I still have yet to hook up the vinyl cutter, rebuild the computer that will be dedicated to it, and the Boy will be here sometime in the first week of June.
I need a clone.

So quickly:

I like MY rainbow better than Skittles (FNFAL mags, color coded for different loadings)

So I'm driving through Des Moines the other day, and blow past an African Grocery store.
I may have to stop & go in, mostly because I want to know what the frak an "ANFRAK" is.

And lastly, nbut not leastly, here is an FAL Test magazine with the popular "pine-straw" or "broom straw" camo pattern. The base color is MagPul Flat Dark Earth, the overlays are Sniper Green, Desert Mirage Brown and Matte Black, followed up witha matte clearcoat.
I have yet to find an Iowa appropriate shade of green, but reckon I'll get there somtime soon.

So, TTFN and have a lovely rest of May.

Sell a Child to Feed a Child

No, this post has nothing to do with me or the Mrs, personally. Lets get that out of the way up front.

It really has to suck to be one of the parents in some turd-world nation that has backed themselves into a corner like this- a corner that is so dark and filled with desperation that your only apparent remaining option, short of violent crime is to sell one of your children in order to feed the others.

(I'm da King of run on sentences baby- WHOHOO!)

How could you live with yourself, every morning, waking up to a missing child, to cook a meal for your family that is the moral equivalent of forcing them into sibling cannibalism? You may never know (or even worse, find out for SURE!) what happened to your child- prostitution, crime, death, medical experiments. It has to be horrible.

Luckily, America is not in that position yet- but it is only luck. This nation's foolish behavior has taken us down a very frightening road-and I suspect that it is all DOWNHILL. I pray that I am wrong, but with human nature being what it is...I'll be glad when we get out West.

As it is now, the economy is falling apart at the seams, and unlike the mighty Battlestar Galactica, there is no funky Cylon goop we can slap on her skeleton to bring her back to life. The crisis is a fundamental ignorance of fundamentals. To modify an old punchline, "No Gold, Radio!"

Learn a skilled trade while you have a chance, or learn to grow food and livestock. I won't need to trade parts or repair services for CPA work or "mad l33t skilz" when the infrastructure snaps and Battlestar USA slides into a decaying orbit, destined to burn up.

Call it a hunch, but I doubt that any of the prominent survival authors, or televison or internet survival specialists are going to find extra room in THEIR lifepod for any latecomers. Don't put yourself in the position that so many parents in other countries have. Don't eat your kids.

If you don't prepare for toughER economic (and otherwise) bleak times, someone ELSE may eat your kids. And your dog. And your cat. AND YOU.

I have been told more than once that if I can't "eat it, shoot it, or (fill in the blank)" then it's not worth having. While this is not TOTALLY true, there is a wisdom to it.

I wonder what a binder of MAGIC:The Gathering or Pokemon Cards will be worth in 2015?
Value for collectors, or value as firestarters?
Do ya reckon anyone will trade seeds, tools, or even toothpaste for them?
Would they trade those things NOW in any slimy mudhole in rural China or India, where these frivolities were probably printed to begin with? I doubt it.

Our brilliant nation of over-consumers have elected Hope and Change.
If you cannot tell by watching short-circuiting Nancy Pelosi, the Cylons aren't COMING, folks-
the Cylons are HERE, and running the ship.

Super-fortunately for us here in the US, "The Plan" is not yet in full swing. time is short, but the methods people are resorting to are not LAST RESORTS. It may seem like it financially to some, but before the Age of the Platinum Unicorn may begin, and before the Easter Bunny can deliver your free health care, even well prepared 'Muricans may find it necessary to take what they consider Desperate Measures (from the 'Murican point of view.)

Anyone short on cash may be tempted to "sell a child to feed a child." I personally believe this is the wrong tactic for the current time.

Lets say a gunowner has to sell a nice piece of their collection to make rent, power, mortgage, or food- well then, that is selling a "child" to feed themselves.

If, HOWEVER, they are selling the piece of their collection in order to buy ammo to feed another piece in their collection...well...whoa. For shame. Sell it for hi-cap magazines instead.
(just kidding about the last few sentences, I just suck at transitioning.)

Point is, some very nice stuff that normally would remain unseen by the masses has and will come up for sale, due to financial necessity or even hardship.)

Case in point:
a close friends personal (but thank heavens, not only) Long Distance Zombie Zapper.
.50 BMG sub MOA. Ouch; I want, but cannot feed it myself. I can count the .50 BMG I have on hand on the fingers and toes of fewer than 10 targets.

Lookie:

More info available on AuctionArms.

Good luck with your collections, folks.
Like old Scoutmaster Vic used to say to me weekly: "Buy Cosmoline."

My SON gives me the finger(s)

So we got to do the second ultrasound the other day, and lo & behold- it is a BOY.
One would think that I could now cease stockpiling weapons and ammunition; in reality, I now have to buy TWO of everything.
Dammit.

Sucky old Iowa here is expecting 10-12 inches of snow on Friday, which will keep me out of the shop Saturday; pisses me off as I wanted to knock out a couple of sets of grips and redo my parkerizing setup. (in case anyone wonders why gunsmiths seem to take forever to get stuff done...)
At least tomorrow I'll be able to finish the grips I started 2 weeks ago, and get some sweet pics of a .17 Marlin being done in Signature Snow (plus.)
Perhaps the TimMeister shall even learn AK disassembly...
The newest family member needs a tan. Mwahahahaha!

Even a short day at the shop...

...beats no shop time at all.

Had to duck out early Saturday due to Ms. Jazzy's birthday, and it was worth every second.
But while there, a 96D Got a dose of FN Green (final coat pending) and a very nice scope got Coyoted up to match the Winchester 70 it is going to live on.

While I skipped the cake (as IF I need it- I look like I ate Michael Moore already!) I did enjoy the post-cake training session for Ms. Jazz:

What a cool family. I am blessed.

First ya practice with the electronic lever action, then you can practice with the Red Ryder (not pictured, but redone in a pink & silver finish that dad did that would give me a run for my money!)

Once you have the Red Ryder down, THEN comes the Crickett.

The targets you can't see are her daddy's deer mounts on the far wall. And the pheasants. And the remote-controlled My Little Pony scooter that mom was driving around.

I bet she's a Riflewoman by age 12.

Rabbits beware.
